Amethyst
The History of Amethyst
“Amethystos” is the Greek word that Amethyst is named after. Seems hard to believe but, amethystos actually means “not drunken.” Yup, the ancient Greeks believed that Amethyst could prevent drunkenness and intoxication. Now, I’ve gotta ask…where was this gemstone when I was barrelling through my late teens and early twenties?
They would often make goblets out of amethyst and drink from them, believing that the stone would prevent them from becoming drunk. As I’m writing this, I’m laughing because I’m picturing a teenage boy trying to convince his parents that he is not as legless drunk as he appears because he’s been drinking out of a goblet carved outta Amethyst. #brilliant #classicteenager
Ancient Egyptians used Amethyst to make jewelry, and it was also used in burial ceremonies. Archeologists have found amulets and talismans made of Amethyst in burial chambers, concreting the belief that ancient Egyptians believed that it protected them from negative energy and any potential harm.
Amethyst Scarabs were pretty popular back in the day as they were found in King Tuts’ and Queen Mererets’ tombs, just to name a few. Amethyst was also used to protect them from witchcraft.
The ancient Romans believed that Amethyst could provide protection against harm and promote clear-headedness. Just like the ancient Egyptians, they too, used Amethyst to ward off negative energy. They even carved goblets out of Amethyst!
Amethyst was also believed to be a status symbol of royalty. Purple cloth (used for creating robes) was often worn by monarchs because it was extremely expensive to produce. No one else could afford to wear purple. So when Amethyst jewelry was brought in by ancient importers, the association between purple robes and the purple gemstone was created.
The Meaning & Healing Properties of Amethyst
Amethyst is reputed to have many healing properties, both physical and emotional. In ancient times, Amethyst was believed to protect whoever wore it from harm and ward off evil spirits, and it is still believed to have protective properties today. Many people wear Amethyst jewelry or keep Amethyst crystals in their homes to ward off negative energy and encourage a sense of calm and well-being.
Amethyst is also used to help with physical healing. It is said to help relieve headaches and migraines, improve circulation, and boost the immune system. It is also believed to help treat insomnia and other sleep disorders, as it promotes relaxation and calmness.
Amethyst is thought to be one of the most spiritual stones as it enhances intuition, healing, spirituality and meditation. Amethyst carries a calming & serene energy that will help you relax. It soothes the body while reducing anxiety and restlessness.
Amethyst can help you manifest your goals while protecting you from any negative energy sent your way. You will feel deeply mindful & peaceful when you keep this gorgeous purple gemstone close.
